Site Work 5

Global Motion
France as an International Art World

October 19-November 23, 1999

Malachi Farrell, Glassbox, Chen Zhen

This series, in three parts, includes installations, residencies, and artists' performances interrogating the definition of a French artist. The international vitality of the Paris art scene is reflected in the work of the participating artists: a multimedia installation by Dublin-born Malachi Farrell; collaborative works by the multinational artist collective Glassbox; and a presentation about his music-making sculptures by Chen Zhen, born in Shanghai. This is the first West coast appearance for each artist. Organized by the University Art Museum in cooperation with other Santa Barbara art institutions, this exhibition takes place in various forms and sites which replace the conventional museum building while it undergoes a major renovation. As an alternative exhibition format, Global Motion includes Chen Zhen’s initial preparation for a site-specific project, the active installation process of Glassbox, and a completed sculptural work by Malachi Farrell.
