Dave Muller, whose works range in scale from tiny note cards to free-standing structures, plays off the tension between high art and commercial advertising. Producing hand-made, one-off posters for other artists' exhibitions, he emphasizes the representational function of his work. His subjects are friends and contemporaries in the LA art world, whom he links to references from popular culture. At the same time, Muller incorporates a broad spectrum of styles in his special kind of portraiture: the psychedelic rock poster look of the Jimi Hendrix piece, 1950s-style interior decorating, a child's origami, modernist graphic design. Each of his pieces achieves a dynamic equilibrium between these diverse elements.
