Alice Neel

Mother and Child (Nancy and Olivia)

1967
oil on canvas
39.25 x 36 in.
Collection of Diane and David Goldsmith

Nancy, the wife of Alice Neel's elder son, Richard, was Neel's assistant and frequent model. Neel's paintings of Nancy include some of her most intimate and thoughtful work. The paintings of Nancy Neel sum up Alice Neel's approach to the sitter. Just as Neel looked for the essence of each individual in her portraits, so she looked for Nancy as she was at a particular time. Neel portrayed Nancy as an individual with an identity recognizable over many years, with an understanding of how that identity responded to the pressures of time and family life.
