John de Martelly (1831-1980)
Looking at Sunshine late 1930s

Viewing the intrusion of big-scale modern technology into the countryside, de Martelly obliquely pays homage to such enormous federally-funded projects as the Tennessee Valley Authority and Boulder Dam, both electrification projects intended to end the backward isolation of the countryside. Does the man long for the quiet past or does he look forward to escaping from it?
