In 1931, nine Black men who had been riding the rails in Scottsboro were arrested for allegedly raping two white women. After years of legal battles, immense pressure and publicity, all were saved from this false accusation; the last was finally released in 1950. Taylor's image was part of that liberal effort; nonetheless, his depictions are still caricatures.
