Black cabarets and dancehalls were a source of endless fascination for white audiences as scenes of both unbridled energy and sexuality. But here the image is almost sedate. We may perhaps read into the image a story of Red Eye, the older man behind the stove, watching over his girls going about their business; but the focus is on the woman in the center and her independent but not aggressive relationship with her dance partner.
