WOMEN beyond borders: The Art of Building Community, organized by the University Art Museum, UCSB, and the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History will explore the nearly ten year history and impact of Women beyond borders and its contribution to contemporary art, as it has challenged geographical, political, religious, ethnic, and aesthetic boundaries. This retrospective on Women beyond borders will go beyond the presentation of boxes created by women around the world to examine the project as it has continually evolved to respond to individual, community, and international interests.
The significance of WOMEN beyond borders goes beyond individual artworks. While the form and content of this project take up many of the criticisms the womens movement has leveled at established art practice since the early 1970s, WOMEN beyond borders is positioned at a crucial intersection in todays art. It combines the creation and exhibition of traditional object-based art with virtual communication via global electronic networks, proposing the building of community among women as an art form in and of itself. While the strikingly diverse boxes made for WOMEN beyond borders have enjoyed worldwide exposure, no exhibition to date has given scholarly attention to this collaborative project as a unique cultural phenomenon at the turn of the century.
